Flame! The Gasworks Museum of Ireland
Carrickfergus boasts Ireland’s sole surviving coal gasworks and is one of only three left in the British Isles. The original gasworks opened in 1855 and supplied the town with gas for over 100 years.
It has now been lovingly and faithfully restored by the Carrickfergus Gasworks Preservation Society and opened to the public. Visit this unique museum and discover how gas was made from coal and used for light, heat and power. Take a nostalgic and educational look at the extensive display of original gas appliances. Groups/school parties are especially welcome to this survivor from a bygone age.
